Michael D. Emerson
Director, Marine Transportation Systems
U.S. Coast Guard
Mike Emerson is the Director for Marine Transportation Systems at Coast Guard Headquarters. He manages a broad portfolio of marine navigation, waterway, and bridge programs, and is also responsible for a wide variety of Polar and Arctic safety and security initiatives.
Emerson retired from the Coast Guard in 2014, after 30 years of service. His tours of duty included the Office of Operations Coordination at Department of Homeland Security, Headquarters; Senior Fellow for CNO Strategic Studies Group in Newport, Rhode Island; Chief of Aviation Forces at Coast Guard Headquarters; Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida; and Chief of Drug Interdiction at Coast Guard Headquarters. His operational assignments included four tours in aviation as a C-130 pilot, and two tours at sea.
Emerson graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Government Degree and has since received a Masters Degree in Military Studies from the Marine Corps University, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from American Military University.
Rear Admiral Nils Wang,
Commandant, Royal Danish Defence College
Rear Admiral Nils Wang is one of Denmark’s leading analysts on issues related to Arctic security and the relationship between Denmark and Greenland. Before he became Commandant of the Danish Defence College he was Head of the Royal Danish Navy for five years and as such also responsible for the naval ships operating in the Arctic. Rear Admiral Nils Wang´s more than ten years of active sea duty in the Danish Navy includes 5 years in Arctic Waters around Greenland. In 2011 he was invited by the Minister of Foreign Affairs as special advisor on Arctic Security during the finalization of the “Kingdom of Denmark - Strategy for the Arctic 2011-2020”.
In 2015 Rear Admiral Nils Wang was appointed to be part of the Taksøe-Jensen Advisory Group, assisting the development of a new set of priorities for Denmark´s future foreign and defence policies. Nils Wang is frequently commenting Arctic matters on national and international media and he is an often used expert/guest speaker on conferences and venues dealing with Arctic issues. In December 2016 Rear Admiral Nils Wang was invited to lecture Senior Executives on Arctic Security at the Harvard Kennedy School, Executive Programme and he is attached as lecturer to the Senior Policy Course at The NATO School in Oberammergau.
